The people who work at JM Financial Strategies are friendly. Down to earth. Good listeners. Having been in the business a long time, we've encountered this mix in attitudes—and a whole lot of market cycles (both good and bad!). We've got a lot of perspectives that can keep you on an even keel through the ups and downs.

Tina G. Huston, CFP®, EA

Financial Advisor

Tina has 35 years of experience helping clients achieve their retirement dreams. While her main focus is retirement planning, she also have extensive knowledge of tax, estate, and investment planning. Tina's approach focuses on the individual's needs, recognizing that each person is different while ensuring every client receives the retirement solution they deserve. She holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and is also an Enrolled Agent.

Tina was raised in San Diego and attended University of San Diego High School.  She graduated from the University of California San Diego with a BA in management science (quantitative economics) and earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Tina serves as Secretary on The Thumbprint Project Foundation Board. Their mission is to bring awareness about childhood domestic violence in order to protect future generations. Tina is also a member of Soroptimists International La Jolla and serves on their investment committee. Their mission is to provide women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

Tina enjoys traveling. Her favorite vacation destinations are anywhere in Hawaii and Nashville, TN. Tina's family has enjoyed traveling in the United States, Canada, Europe, Tunisia, and Costa Rica—experiencing new cultures and delicious foods. She lives in University City with her husband, Jeff, and doggos, Nellie and Seymour (see below).

Terence T. Tunnell, CFP®, CPA

Financial Advisor

Terry joined the firm in 2010. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, he enjoys helping clients with a variety of financial needs. A double Aztec, Terry graduated from San Diego State University with a BA in accounting and a few years later earned an MS in accounting with an emphasis in taxation. His work in both public accounting and private industry, prior to joining our firm, gives him a broad base of experience to draw from.

Terry is also a Registered Representative and Investment Advisor Representative with Commonwealth Financial Network®. He holds FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 securities registrations, and also has life and variable annuity insurance licenses (CA Insurance Lic #0H67950).

Terry grew up in northern California and moved to San Diego to attend SDSU. He and his wife, Julie, and son, Brian (2017 graduate of Notre Dame), have resided in Scripps Ranch since 1992, including rebuilding their home after the Cedar Fire of October 2003. In their spare time, they enjoy time at home, sporting events, restaurants, and anything Notre Dame-related (Julie is also an alumnus). GO IRISH! GO AZTECS!

John Rey, CFP®, CPA

Financial Advisor

As a New York native, John attended the State University of New York at Binghamton where he studied accounting. After graduation John began his career at Ernst & Young LLP, where he obtained his CPA license and worked in the Entrepreneurial Services Division as a Senior Audit Associate. Following this, he worked at the New York Stock Exchange in its Market Surveillance Division. John then operated a CPA and tax firm, where he specialized in tax preparation for individuals and estates.

John earned a Master of Science in business administration from San Diego State University, with a specialization in financial and tax planning. Furthermore, he holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification.

In addition to his experience in the financial sector, John worked at Mater Dei Catholic High School for several years in various leadership capacities, serving as its President for over 5 years.

John lives in San Diego with his wife, Maegan, and their three children, Breanna, Mikayla, and Brady.  He enjoys cycling, running, and coaching his children’s soccer and baseball teams. 

John serves on the Board of Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation, which is a charitable foundation supporting the lifelong needs of Noah Homes Inc., a residential community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 

Rhonda Johnson

Registered Assistant

Rhonda joined our firm in July 1999, and in January 2003 she became our registered assistant. She holds FINRA Series 6 and 63 securities registrations with Commonwealth Financial Network. In this role, she handles a broad range of operational inquiries. She is responsible for all securities-related administrative duties for our advisors, which requires a great deal of multitasking. She is the point of contact for all mutual fund and annuity companies to facilitate client requests. She enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her interests include reading, listening to all genres of music, and watching just about every type of sports-related event.

Caroline J. Roberti, CRTP

Tax Preparer, Office Manager

Caroline joined the JM Financial team in 2012 to help with office administration in a seasonal and part-time capacity and became full-time in 2016. She now assists with income tax preparation in addition to providing customer service, scheduling, and technical support. Caroline has a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University and is a registered tax preparer (CRTP) in the state of California. She is an artist in her spare time and enjoys nature walks, photography, and spending time with her husband and two cats. Caroline is also an avid science-fiction enthusiast and loves books, movies, and video games of the genre.

 

Brian M. Mahoney, JD

In-House Counsel

Brian joined our firm in May 2023. He has more than 10 years of experience in providing various services to investment clients. 

Brian enjoys helping clients. He assists our firm’s investment clients in opening accounts, transferring funds, and other related duties. Brian has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University and a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego. He has been a licensed California attorney since 1996.

In his free time, Brian likes to do things to optimize his health, which is also known as “biohacking.” He likes to make fermented vegetables, fermented beverages, and even yogurt. Brian also likes to read, listen to music, meditate, and perform energy practices, such as reiki and qigong.

Paige Huston, CRTP

Securities/Tax Intern

As Tina’s daughter, Paige has grown up in the JM Financial office, often filling in as a receptionist. Paige worked in this office part-time while attending San Diego State University.

After graduating in December 2022 with a BS in business marketing, Paige has moved to a full-time position, becoming a California Registered Tax Preparer (CRTP). She is currently studying for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) in an effort to return to SDSU to pursue a master’s in business analytics with an emphasis in tax and financial planning. In 2024, she plans to study for and receive her FINRA Series 7 and 63 securities registrations. Her hobbies include going to the beach, playing volleyball, attending Padres games, painting, and travelling.

Nell and Seymour

Office Greeters/Stress Therapists

Nell (15, black coat) is a Bichon mix. She is friendly and loves to meet new people, although she prefers to hang out under Tina's desk most of the day. Her hobbies include long walks, chasing lizards, and napping in the reception area. Seymour (7, tan coat) is a terrier rescue from Tijuana, Mexico. Seymour occasionally visits our office when his main human friend, Jeff, is out of town. Seymour enjoys belly rubs, treats, long walks, and playing catch.
